How goes the enemy / 2014 by Valsan Koorma Kolleri, Kochi Muziris Biennale 2014

There are two ways of enjoying the installations at Kochi Biennale. One either just walks in and makes own interpretations or Understand the artists interpretations in advance and then connect with it. When I visited Cabral Yard I did not have any clue about the artists view of the exhibits, and I did not have the patience to read the descriptions in very small fonts, standing. Post visit, when I had the opportunity to go through the artists version, it had much more substance than I could comprehend without it.

About the artist Valsan Koorma Kolleri

Born in 1953 in Pattiam, India. Lives and works from there.

The exhibits in the Cabral Yard seeks to transform this disused enclosure, a site where nature has spontaneously taken back a strip of earth once occupied by human activity, into a dynamic cultural space. It is an individuals exploration about time. The artist rearranged the natural elements found in this unused site such as laterite stones, mud and clay. The sculpture at the entrance responds to the sun. It follows the same principle as the sundial. In the course of the biennale, rainfall and humid air will erode the laterite and the mud surfaces, and with this act of time the beauty of the installation will slowly emerge.
